It’s safe to say Melbourne has a strong reputation of pushing the boundaries when it comes to anything travel and lifestyle related. In addition to having an eclectic fashion and food scene, the city has also been voted the World’s Most Liveable City for the sixth time in a row this year.
You’d think by that point Melbourne would have reached its peak by now – but no, because out of the blue comes Notel, Australia’s newest and most anticipated rooftop accommodation.
The concept is the brainchild Melbourne-born entrepreneur James Fry, who wanted to create something completely different that would still excite the people of Melbourne – the same people who live in a city that is renowned for practically having everything most people could ever want or need in their lives.
Thus came the idea of Notel, a rooftop hotel that’s like a trailer park without the dingy atmosphere and filled with much better perks. Combining retro airstream caravans (much like the ones in the 70’s) with modern interior design and innovative technology, each room includes a queen size bed, private ensuite bathroom, complimentary wifi, unlimited Netflix, even a ‘help yourself at no charge’ mini bar that stocks piccolos, Shiki beer and gourmet chocolate for your enjoyment. And yes, just to clarify, these caravans are located on the rooftop of a car park.
But the experience doesn’t begin there. In fact, it begins the moment you book the accommodation from your computer. Make note that there isn’t a concierge to this place, instead you’ll be emailed or texted a code that you’ll have to swipe to get in. But to do that, you’ll have to find the hidden door to get inside the venue in the first place (hint: it’s a single door located near a coffee shop close by). Indeed, the concept is certainly a unique one, to say the least.
Who would have thought that one day Melbourne would be home to a rooftop hotel filled with caravans sitting on top of a car park? Honestly, I don’t think anyone did. Alas, this is actually a thing now, but a glorious one at that.
